The two big names on yesterday’s runways were Ralph Lauren and Marc Jacobs, and as usual neither were a disappointment.
Ralph Lauren was not the only designer reverting back to their roots at New York Fashion Week. Lauren decided to revisit the roaring 20’s with this collection and play homage to the Great Gatsby which was what truly jump-started his career in 1947.
Wallpaper floral patterns and a soft pastel color pallet dominated the show. You saw the classic double-breasted suit in lighter colors like gray and blue. Silk, high-waist trousers in pastel colors were also a show stealer. Drop waist dresses with a lot of beading, feathers and silky fabric also stood out. And, let’s not forget the ultimate flapper girl dress.
The silhouettes were subtle, classic and undoubtedly sexy.
The collection has that old Hollywood glamor feel, especially with the silky fabrics and silhouettes.
Although Lauren revisits the past, he also played up the already confirmed trends for spring of head to toe white and loose, flowing fabrics and continued color blocking.

Marc Jacobs played off his fall 2011 collection letting the ‘sequin’ like material transfer over to spring. There were also a lot of other interesting combinations of media and texture that definitely made the collection stand out.
There were drop waist, fringed dressed in shades of blue and green layered over gingham button-ups. There were tank tops made entirely of a fringed shiny material over classic cut straight skirts. There were also athletic looking sweatshirts paired with colorful draped skirts and many other interesting combinations of fabrics and silhouettes.
The clothes were a mixture of synthetics and natural fabrics, though some of the synthetic fabrics were definitely more obvious than others. Some tops were draped with an almost plastic looking material giving a little edge to the classic button ups on top.
Most of the skirts were knee-length, as almost everything was this season, and straight. A few draped skirts and dresses made it into the mix, but the draping was very ‘carefree’ looking.

There was a bit of everything in the collection, and it was a little hard to pull out his inspiration for this collection. I definitely got a 1920’s, 30’s and 70’s feel. Although he played off of the past for inspiration there was also a futuristic feel with clear ankle booties and clear plastic looking draped skirts. Jacobs took a little bit from every iconic era in fashion, added futuristic elements in the form of fabrics and rolled it all into one to shape next season.
