New York Fashion Week: Mens Edition

As New York Fashion Week has come and gone, three emerging trends for Men are promising for Spring 2012: Vibrant colors, shorts and double-breasted jackets.

Color is everywhere in Richard Chai’s Spring 2012 Collection. From sea foam to orange to fuchsia, color is the main attraction. Once used for only accents, punchy colors have hit the runway in the form of jackets and chinos.  Chai uses khakis and grays to calm the vibrant pieces.

Slim and short or drop-crotch and baggy, shorts took on all styles at the tents this week. Slim and plaid, Parke & Ronen paired their swim shorts with loose button downs for a more laid back look. Zippers and buttons graced the army green shorts of the General Idea Collection. The harem fit paired with a checked shirt and a classic fedora gives the look a more sophisticated feel.

Popularized in the 30’s, the double-breasted jacket is back in a brand new way.  It was first seen in Milan for Spring 2012 from designers like Dolce & Gabbana and Ermenegildo Zegna. With a collection inspired by Manchester, England in the late 70’s, Bespoken introduced a short-suit including a soft tailored double-breasted jacket paired with an accenting sweater. The arm cuff and boots complete the look by giving it an edgy, European feel.

“This is a very new season, I think it is one of the seasons where everyone just took a deep breath and said ‘Okay we’ve got to re-invent ourselves’,” Michael Hainey on Spring 2012 in an interview with GQ.
