When I first walked past these earrings at Nordstrom, I did a double-take. Wait, what? Did somebody switch around all of the earrings in the display? As I looked closer, I saw this was not the case. Betsey Johnson had come out with an all-new, trend setting idea: mismatched earrings.


While my love for Betsey Johnson is passionate, my wallet doesn’t always agree. The earrings pictured above are Betsey Johnson’s English Tea Set Mismatch Earrings and they run for $45.00. Cute idea, but on a college budget these earrings are impractical. But it got me thinking—why couldn’t I just mismatch earrings on my own?

Surprisingly, I found this extremely easy! Claire’s jewelry stores have all sorts of cute earrings sets with anywhere from 3 to 9 pairs of earrings. While you’re getting these cute matching pairs of earrings, you can also mismatch them for even more options! For instance, the Wild West Studs, can make their obvious three pairs. But try wearing a horseshoe with a heart! It’s a subtle, but creative way to wear this trend!

Second, some of Betsey Johnson’s Mismatched Earrings are just flipped upside down! The Mouse Mismatched Earrings are $40.00, but pictured next to them are an inexpensive take on this idea. Claire’s Leopard Flower Earrings are only $11.50 and showcase the same idea.

Like the teapot and teacup in the very first pair of Betsey Johnson earrings, it’s all about having a “theme.” Keys and locks, monkeys and bananas, even birds and feathers. The earrings just have to convey some sort of theme. Above is Claire’s Whimsical Studs Sets, which have all sorts of cute mismatches. The clock and the key, the birdcage and the bow, or the floral heart with the flower. Any of these matches will be unique choices that are cute and creative.
