Starbucks Joins Forces with CFDA/VOGUE Fashion Designers

Remarkable collaborations occur all the time in the fashion industry. The best ones are unexpected, but brilliant. The Starbucks Coffee + CFDA/VOGUE FASHION FUND undeniably falls under this category.

To celebrate their 40th anniversary, Starbucks teamed up with the past three winners Alexander Wang in 2008, Sophie Theallet in 2009 and Billy Reid 2010 to create T-shirts that were inspired by Starbucks.

Because each designer has a distinct style, the results were remarkable and incredibly unique. Alexander Wang created a fun, lighthearted look that features a coffee spill illusion of the iconic Starbucks Siren.

"When Starbucks and the CFDA approached us with this project, the first thing we thought of what everyone tries to avoid—spilled coffee on a t-shirt. This turned into the design, hoping people would have fun with it,” Wang said to Starbucks.

Sophie Theallet said, "I was inspired by the global community, and all the connections involved around a cup of Starbucks coffee”

This community inspiration is illustrated by her extraordinary “continents” design. The shirt also features her signature grosgrain ribbon tie, adding her feminine touch to a basic T-shirt.

"We were inspired by the iconic images and American success story of Starbucks over the past 40 years. So 1971 stood out as an important number that we wanted to implement in the design, along with the iconic Siren and beautiful signature wallpaper prints. As for the shirt itself, we wanted a certain broken-in quality that looks great worn inside out, is a bit antiqued in spirit, and ready for wear immediately,” Billy Reid said. These T-shirts undoubtedly stay true to Reid’s “American luxury” aesthetic.

These T-shirts are available at Starbucks or in select Nordstrom locations. At $85, most college students are unable to purchase the shirts, but by appreciating the designs and understanding the inspiration of the talented CFDA/VOGUE designers, true fans of Starbucks and fashion can feel connected to this piece of Starbucks history.
