College student friendly tricks to being healthy

Being a college student already brings about great difficulty in finding ways to eat healthy. But when we’re deceived daily by labels and advertisements telling the public inaccurate information about what is healthy, it makes it even more of a challenge to stay true to our diets.

My best advice for anyone who wants to lose weight is to avoid processed foods at all costs. They’re fake food made in factories, David Ludwig, M.D., Ph.D., director of the pediatric weight loss Optimal Weight for Life Program in Boston, said.

I found this astonishing statistic while doing research on EverydayHealthy.com “Any food that has been canned, dehydrated, or had chemicals added to it is a processed food, and these foods make up about 60 percent of the average American diet.”

And these foods are everywhere, which makes it even more difficult to avoid ingesting processed foods.

Artificial sweeteners that are “diet friendly” are said to do more harm to our bodies than sugar. Sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose and saccharin are all types of artificial sweeteners. Studies suggest that artificial sweeteners are linked to headaches and cancer, not to mention they are chemically made which is harder for your body to digest.

You can find these in packets on the table at a restaurant, in diet drinks or sugar free items. I went around and polled 10 people at the ASU Downtown Campus to see who used artificial sweeteners daily.

It turned out that eight out of the ten people I asked used sweeteners daily and didn’t see the harm in using it, they just really cared about the taste.

Ryan Hill, freshman at ASU commented on artificial sweeteners saying, “ It’s a lot more accessible and less expensive than real sugar, but it tastes the same”

Some other foods I found that you would think are healthy that aren’t; granola bars, fruit snacks and frozen yogurt. Shocking I know but frozen yogurt is still loaded with sugar and calories not too mention the toppings added in. Both granola bars and fruit snacks are also loaded with sugar.

The secret to being healthy is looking at the ingredients and knowing less is more. If it takes you longer than 10 seconds to read the label, chances are that it is not healthy!

SAG Awards red carpet recap

The annual Screen Actors Guild Awards featured a plethora of new fashion styles and creative designs. The inspirational awards show is both to appreciate the actors' talent as well as their fashion sense. Some famous names to be noted who appeared on the red carpet are as follows:

Brad Pitt opted for a classic black suit and his leading lady, Angelina Jolie also chose a casual black Jenny Packham ensemble. Jolie added a Louis Vuitton bag and Gucci shoes, but said she wanted to be comfortable.

George Clooney, who has been nominated for his talent in The Descendants, sported a Giorgio Armani tux. Stacy Keibler followed his lead by wearing a black Marchesa dress. Both ensembles display a very body-flattering image.

Yet another black dress worn on the red carpet was by actress Emma Stone. This Alexander McQueen lace bustier dress contrasts beautifully with her skin tone. Simple accessories such as her clutch and Tiffany & Co. diamond jewelry emphasize the overall elegance.

Another fellow Marchesa-lover, the Modern Family actress, rocked a pink Marchesa original favorite. The shape of the gown added a feminine silhouette to Sofia Vergara's curves.

Glee star, Lea Michele confidently stepped out in a sexy, silver Versace dress. To add extra sprinkles to the outfit, she pairs it with Lorraine Schwartz jewels.

Paris Haute Couture

The Paris Haute Couture shows took place January 23^rd through January 25^th and featured many high fashion designers with looks that ranged from Rock and Roll goddess to a more prairie like princess.

Haute couture shows allow designers to let loose and create looks that border on madness, which makes it incredibly engaging for viewers.

Versace

Versace started off the week featuring architectural dresses with feminine details like lace, ruching and huge roses. The colors moved from a neutral light grey to a bright yellow, with pops of metallic gold, lime green and fiery orange.

Alexis Mabille

Drama was definitely the tone at the Alexis Mabille show with all models wearing huge rose headdresses with their faces painted to match. Pink, red, yellow, teal, blue and purple metallic fabrics made the business-structured clothes fun and fabulous.

Christian Dior

Dior channeled a 50’s housewife with A-line and pencil skirts that hit below the knee paired with voluminous tops that broadened the models shoulders. The show then transitioned into evening gowns that featured sheer fabric cutouts and looks drawn in at the waist.

Chanel

Lagerfeld turned up the drama with oversized sleeves and massive pockets on the mid-thigh. With a range of fabrics from tweed to metallic with beaded details this show was anything but ordinary, even with a neutral color palette of light grey, white, black, and navy.

Givenchy

Floor length gowns were spiced up with metallic fabrics paired with leather and fur accessories. Models also wore massive nose rings that further pushed the looks from traditional to high fashion.

Alexandre Vauthier

Plunging necklines and slits up to the hipbone created a seductive runway show with a fantasy-like quality. Black and white material was draped in ways that showed off the models figure while still maintaining an effortless quality.

Elie Saab

High necklines and lace dominated the Elie Saab runway. A soft, pastel color palette and dresses cinched in at the waist with a small bow belt created ultra feminine looks reminiscent of dresses worn in the 1800’s.

Jean Paul Gaultier

Using the late Amy Whinehouse as his inspiration, Gaultier created a runway show that combined rock and roll with Hollywood pinup. The hot pink runway perfectly complimented the other neon colors that complimented the singer’s signature black lace.

Valentino

The Valentino runway looked like something straight off the prairie featuring looks with high necks, long sleeves, lace, and floral prints. Flat shoes complimented the looks that transported viewers back in time.

All the designers at Paris Haute Couture week definitely surpassed expectations and created shows that are not soon to be forgotten.

Fast fashion fixes for the girl always on the go

You’re on your way out and feeling confident as ever. Your outfit has been picked out since the beginning of the week and your hair was absolutely loving you. SNAP! Your heel breaks.

Something as detrimentally imposing as a broken heel should not cause you to stand crooked all night. These quick fashion fixes will solve all your problems and set your ensemble straight!

Two words: shoe goo. Apply a bit of this adhesive to the sole of your shoes where the heel connects to it and hold in place for about 60 seconds. Now there’s an sure fire way to “pump” up your night.

Carrie Adams, a Freshman at Arizona State University, said, “My biggest fashion pet peeve is when I have to go somewhere after a long day and I don’t have all of my make-up and need just a quick pick-me-up such as something to really brighten up my face.”

This slight annoyance should not stop you from achieving the brightly glowing complexion you deserve. Without having to cart your extensive make-up regimen around, stick to the rule of thumb “less is more” by instead using a portable facial moisturizer.

A girl hasn’t done her job if she comes home with clean shoes. The inevitable scuff has become synonymous with having a good time, so therefore we shall no longer have to play it safe with this quick fashion fix.

Rub each of the scuff marks gently with your hand to remove them; the oils in your skin will help the mark disappear. Dip a soft polishing cloth into shoe wax and apply the wax in small circles over the scuffs and then let them dry for about 15 minutes. Once dry, use that same cleaning cloth to buff the shoe until it’s even once again. Voila! Don’t be surprised if your friends mistake them for brand new.

A common make-up mishap is the moment when both your heart and compact powder breaks. All hope seems lost as you’re bending over to rescue the remainder of powder from your compact, but once again there is yet another solution for this foundation flop.

Add a few small drops of an alcohol-based solution to your broken powder. Once the powder becomes soft again, reform it by smoothing it out with your finger and then let it dry overnight for best results!

For stubborn make-up stains, you can use a mild detergent such as shampoo or liquid dish soap. Apply it in a circular motion onto the stain with a dish cloth. If this doesn’t work immediately, baking soda is your new best friend, helping to not only remove bad odors but to also help in the removal of oil-based make-up stains. Use an old damp toothbrush to apply it in circular motions.

With these quick and easy fashion fixes, you will no longer have to settle for anything less than perfect, or at least tricking people into thinking it is. From grime to glam, broken to brand new, or lifeless to lustrous, these tricks are foolproof! With these in mind you’ll be sure to stand tall… Because “broken heel” is just no longer in your vocabulary.

Though gorging on food isless socially acceptable now; it’s time to get back on track. Here are a coupleof simple workout tips when facing this season that may help:

1 - Fact: you actually burn more calories when youwork out during the winter because your body has to work harder to stay warm.However, this might not help you much in Phoenix in the middle of the day, butit is still cold enough in early morning or when the sun goes down to go outand use this to your advantage. Simply by getting out into the cold weather isa good place to start.

2 - Hydrate: just because it’s no longer so hot thatthe second you step outside you start sweating doesn’t mean you can’t easilyget dehydrated. Drinking at leasteight ounces of water is recommended every day.

3 - Wear bright colors. It gets darker earlier nowso if you are out late and it starts getting dark you want to make sure you aresafe and visible. Besides, it doesn’t hurt to wear bright colors, brights arein this season.

4 - Swimsuit season is only a couple months away. Ifyou want to work on gettinga bikini-ready stomach it’s best to start now. The abdominal portion of theP90x workout is an effective way to reach that goal. As a forewarning it is arigorous exercise so you will need to work on your endurance. It’s that time of year when the gyms are overcrowded, empty workout machines are nowhere to be found and cute guys are in plain site. It’s hard enough to keep your look up when surrounded by sweat, but fashion is taking over those bland and unflattering workout clothes and turning them into hot new workout wear to get you noticed while getting fit.

ASU freshman Sierra Oshrin uses LuLu Lemon’s clothing line for all her workout needs.

“LuLu Lemon has the best workout clothes ever! They are expensive, but last forever,” Oshrin said. “They have accessories and clothes for every type of workout activity.”

In September 2004 Stella McCartney launched her joint venture line with Adidas. While you might not have heard about this collaboration recently, it’s worth looking into. The collection consists of clothing for every form of exercise from yoga and gym wears to skiing and hiking clothing.

Stella McCartney is quoted on the Adidas site saying, “I wanted to make sports clothes for women that didn’t look like an afterthought. The key is these clothes enhance your performance, they look good but they also do a job.”

Another great trending label for work out wear is Gap Inc.’s Athleta. Athleta has active wear for women for every workout. With reasonable prices and a wide variety of items its no wonder that 2012 has become Athleta’s year.

They recently released their first ad campaign with the slogan “Power to the She”.

"Athleta customers want to do it all 一 they lead extremely active and busy lives," Tess Roering, Athleta's vice president of marketing and creative, said in a statement to the Los Angeles Times. "Their desire to keep reaching for more is what 'Power to the She' is all about."

So who knows, maybe all you need is a new outfit to find that little bit of motivation to look good, feel good and hit the gym!

Get ready fashionistas, February 5 Jason Wu will be coming to a Target near you.

Yes, you heard right. Designer Jason Wu collaborated with Target for his first mass-retailer project which will offer signature Wu dresses, feminine tops, handbags and scarves for just 20-60 dollars.

Someone pinch me, this must be a dream. I, like many other college fashionistas, will finally be able to afford some Wu. The NY based designer who designed first lady Michelle Obama’s iconic white off-the-shoulder inaugural dress has quickly become a household name, making him an easy choice for a Target collaboration.

“Jason is one of the most influential designers in the fashion industry today,” Trish Adams, senior vice president of apparel and accessories at Target, told the NY Post. “We knew that guests would love finding his chic signature style at Target. His designs are perfectly suited for a springtime collection.”

The best thing about this collection is that it will probably live in your closet longer than just a season. The collection offers classic timeless pieces that definitely don’t scream “Target”.

The collection plays on classic Wu with feminine silhouettes, sophistication and elegance, also taking inspiration from films.

“My inspiration came from the French new wave films — in particular the women who defined this movement, such as Anna Karina and Jean Seberg,” Wu, 29, told the NY Post. “I wanted the collection to have a sophisticated voice with an American sportswear spin.”

The 53 piece collection will be available online and in stores Feb. 5 but after what happened with the Missoni collection back in September, don’t delay getting your hands on some Wu.

Wu told the NY Post he was flattered by the collaboration and I know fashionistas everywhere are just as grateful and excited as he is.

Rachel Zoe to launch two new lines

The Rachel Zoe Collection, which currently has shoes, bags and ready-to-wear, will have two new lines added to it in February, although designer Rachel Zoe is keeping them under wraps for now.

“I can’t say what they are yet. I’d have to kill you if I told you,” said Zoe in an LG promotion video.

The celebrity stylist turned reality star turned fashion designer is known for her “easy glamour” and although there is no word on what she is adding to her line, most are speculating it will either be in the denim, lingerie or eyewear category.

“I’m on my constant mission to create a lifestyle brand,” continues Zoe in her promotional video. “I want everything to be Rachel Zoe, head to toe.”

With the addition of her two newsletters, Zoe Beautiful and AccessZOEries, some are also thinking that the designer could be launching a beauty or accessories line.

The beauty newsletter consists of basic make-up and hair tips while the accessories newsletter showcases shoes, handbags and lots of jewelry.

We all know we wouldn’t mind effortlessly glam make-up and jewels from Zoe.

Zoe’s first collection was hugely successful. Fashionistas, critics and celebrities everywhere are looking forward to the new additions to her line this February.

Critics' Choice Awards Fashion Critique

Hollywood kicked off their 2012 award season in a big waywith the Critics’ Choice Awards Jan. 12!

The star studded show, which aired on VH1, was chock-full ofhilarious presenters, award surprises, snubs and some truly touching moments.But we’re here to talk about what’s on everyone’s mind: the clothes!

Stars That Shined:

Jessica Chastain inBalenciaga: The actress told TheHollywood Reporter “I wassupposed to wear something else and it wasn't finished. This [dress] arrivedtoday, fit perfectly and all it needed was a hem. So ten minutes before I gotin the car to come here, my dress was being hemmed!”

Well that extra rush paidoff. “The Help” starlet looked absolutely radiant. The dress fit her like aglove and made great use of this season’s hot bright color trend. The bubblegum pink accented her fair skin perfectly and the slicked back hair and berrypink lips add a fun sophistication to the look.

Michelle Williams inChanel: Williams went classic with a contemporary twist in this KarlLagerfeld design. The panels add a modern feel to the gown whilethe contrasting black and white color scheme alone with a waist cinching beltkeep the look timeless and oh so elegant.

Minimal makeup and jewelry made sureall eyes were on the dress. The color palette also complimented the actressesnewly ginger locks perfectly.

George Clooney andStacy Keibler in Armani: Talk about a two-for-one special! The Best Actorwinner and his gorgeous girlfriend both stunned in Armani on the red carpet.Clooney opted for the classically chic tuxedo while his leading lady kept itsimple in this figure flattering ensemble by the powerhouse designer. The pair weredefinitely the star couple of the night!

Elle Fanning inRodarte: While usually and inspiration on the red carpet, the “Super 8”actress dropped the ball in this Rodarte Spring 2012 gown. Theclashing sunflowers and sea foam green print dress is ill-fitting and does notflatter the young starlet. The metallic booties and laid back ‘just got out ofbed’ hair were also not appropriate for an A-list awards show.

Carrie Keagan: Thehost of VH1’s “Big Morning Buzz Live” clearly wanted to make a big splash onthe gray carpet but her patterned, feathered frock was all wrong for this awardshow. The gown was simply too over-the-top and too busy.

From the alternatingskirt layers of different feathers and geometric patterns to the bodice thatwas clearly too big for her, it was just a lot to take in at once. On apositive note, Keagan’s simply glam hairdo and natural looking makeup werestill a hit.

Cicely Tyson: Theexperienced thespian took away the Best ensemble award along with her costarsfrom the “The Help” but her ensemble is anything but award winning. From thepoorly fitted blazer, to the feathered skirt, to the lace and inappropriatelyexposed bra top, to the hat and the over-the-top teardrop earrings, this outfithad me crying out for her stylist.

It’s one thing to embrace the lace, feather,or menswear trends; it’s another to try to combine them all in one thrown togethermess. Here’s hoping the talented star makes a better appearance at the next redcarpet.

From couture runway looks to homemade outfits, your pet will look fabulous as long as you keep their personality, weather conditions and of course their comfort in mind.

Colleen Paige, celebrity pet lifestyle expert and animal behaviorist, started this fun holiday in 2009 as a way to celebrate pets and contribute to the pet fashion community. Animal Miracle Network has acted as the official sponsor of this event.

"It's important to remember though, that it's not a day to disrespect our pets with uncomfortable, vulgar and/or seasonally inappropriate costumes for the sake of a laugh or photo shoot," Paige said.

As Heidi Klum repeatedly says on the hit TV show, “Project Runway,” “In fashion, one day you’re in, and the next day you’re out.” With ever changing trends, it’s difficult to stay on top of what’s in style.

There is one fad, however, that never goes out of style: giving back to those who are less fortunate.

There are a multitude of high-end designers who have either set up or become involved with charities to give back and make an impact on the world through their career in fashion.

Ralph Lauren works with The Pink Pony Fund, as well as overseeing the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention. Donatella Versace started the Versace One Foundation to support children in China.

Michel Kors works with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Oscar De La Renta with New Yorkers for Children. Diana Von Furstenberg supports Vital Voices and Donna Karan collaborates with The Urban Zen Foundation. And this is just to name a few!
Angela Missoni, the creative director for Missoni who works with the organization Orphan Aid Africa, said, “Giving back has always been important to me and my family. We have been so blessed. No matter how busy you are, you have time to set aside time for others.”

So this year, I challenge you all to remove the focus from yourselves and give back to the community. Fashion Delivers and Sevenly are two extremely fashionable organizations I recommend becoming involved with.

Fashion Delivers is an organization that seeks to “mobilize the fashion community to reach out and affect the world through their donations of new products from the men's, women's and home industries.” Their donations provide relief to survivors of natural disasters.

Sevenly is an organization that collaborates with various charities by selling T-shirts online. With a new charity every week, you have the opportunity to not only expand your wardrobe, but to support several causes and raise awareness.

Bodymetrics is bringing the dressing room to your living room

It is not a secret that shopping for clothing from home has its’ pitfalls: no dressing rooms, varying return policies, having to pay for shipping and having to wait for the order to first process then ship to name a few.

One of those problems is about to change thanks to London-based company, Bodymetrics. Online fashionistas will be able to virtually try on the clothing they are looking at in the comfort of their own home.

Bodymetrics has recently partnered with PrimeSense Technology in order to launch a 3D body mapping scanner, set to debut this week at the International Consumer Electronics Show.

“Right now a lot of technologies are coming together: social media, body-scanners, and online accounts that store your body measurements. We believe soon most retailers will install body scanners and allow customers to access their Bodymetrics account online and through their phones,” said Suran Goonatilake, CEO of Bodymetrics, in a press release.

The technology uses the same PrimeSense 3D sensors as the Microsoft Kinect.

The product calculates 100 measurements to help the shopper find the better fit for their unique shape and size.

While the final product does not have a permanent release date, the product will most likely hit shelves for around $150.

I took to the streets to see how a student would feel about this new technology.

"If I shopped online more often, I would definitely invest in this. It sounds pretty cool," said Lindsey Brass, a junior at Arizona State University.

Often, those who plan on investing in the Stock Market for the first time choose to invest with their favorite companies. When my interest in the stock market first sparked, I jotted down a few of companies I had been loyal to and that I would like to invest in.

Of course, I had my luxury brands like Chanel and Henri Bendel, but little did I know that these brand names were privately owned and not open to the masses. Although Chanel is still private, another notable and reputable designer name is up for grabs.

Calling all girls with an affinity for Michael Kors and his many lines; he has gone public and is Wall Street’s newest addition.

Previously, like many other fashion houses, Michael Kors was a private company. But after the morning of December 15, Michael Kors Holding Ltd opened up in the stock market to a whopping 25 percent and a $20.00 IPO.

“After pricing, its initial public offering at $20 a share, above its estimated range of $17 to $19 a share, the fashion brands shares closed at $24.20 per share,” said CNN Money’s Maureen Farrell.

This meant that Michael Kors Holding Ltd. company surpassed Ralph Lauren’s opening public debut, which raised $767 million in 1997.

Although still smaller when it comes to IPO value compared to leading retail luxury brands such as Burberry and Ralph Lauren, who is to say that Kors can’t top them in years to come with a smart renovation or addition in this fashion house?

Does Jonathon Adler pop up in your head? Just something for you to consider. Vera Wang and Kate Spade both added home lines to their companies and have seen progress, nothing drastic, but it’s all about how you execute it.

Michael Kors has blossomed over the past 30 years into one of today’s leading designers. Just imagine what he could do with a home line in the coming years.

Cosmopolitan’s February cover stirs up some controversy

Dakota Fanning shines on the cover of February’s issue ofCosmopolitan, which will hit Newsstands January 10.

The 17-year-old actress looks flawless in a blunt haircutand pink, beaded J. Mendel dress, but the racy headlines surrounding thestarlet has stirred quite the controversy.

“His Best Sex Ever” “Too Naughty to say Here” and “Um,Vagina, Are You Ok Down There” surround the young beauty.

While Fanning is currently underage, she is turning 18 in February andCosmopolitan sees this as almost a “coming of age” cover for her.

Cosmo wrote, “We’re thrilled to feature Dakota Fanning on the February cover ofCosmopolitan magazine and she looks stunning. Dakota is a mature, fearlessyoung woman and we are proud to honor her as our Fun Fearless Female of theyear. We applaud her unprecedented accomplishments which will continue in 2012with her four upcoming movie roles.”

The feature, titled “Welcome to Your Cosmo Years, Dakota”showcases Fanning’s style highlights since 2001 and more “grown-up” pictureswith captions like, “Two years ago this would have been cute. Now it’s hot.”

Media expert Rachelle Friberg told FoxNews.com,”Cosmopolitan is going overboardby putting an underage girl on its cover surrounded by such article titles. Itis one thing to educate young women about sex and their bodies, but putting ayoung, underage girl on the cover of a magazine that had long been known topush the limits is sending the wrong image.”

Fanning’s reps were reached for comment by various newsorganizations, but have yet to comment on this matter.

The January 2012 issues for major American fashion magazines such as Marie Claire, Vogue, InStyle and Elle are showing off powerful female figures such as Angelina Jolie, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Garner and Katherine Heigl.

The January issue of Marie Claire featured Angelina Jolie, who defines what it means to be a working mother. While she just wrapped production of her new film "In the Land of the Blood and Honey," which she directed and wrote, she still remains grounded and focused on the things that matter in her heart - her family.

In her cover story interview Jolie says, “Well, I have a few girlfriends. I just...I stay home a lot. I’m just not very social. I don’t do a lot with them, and I’m very homebound.”

Meryl Streep, another powerhouse female figure, appeared on January’s issue of Vogue. She discussed her new film "The Iron Lady" and her many accomplishments.

Vogue also highlighted one of the most well known designers, Marc Jacobs. Rumors have conspired that Jacobs will be leaving Louis Vuitton for Dior.

"I am at Vuitton, and I am very happy there,” Jacobs said. “I’ve been saying that for a long time. There have been on-and-off conversations about Dior. I don’t know; maybe someday in the future, maybe years from now... But right now I am at Vuitton, and all that matters to me is that that’s where I am and I’m going to keep doing my thing.”

Elle’s January issue focused on the ins and outs of women with self-help articles, makeovers and ways to gain your self-confidence back in the New Year. You can find a guide to keep your new years resolutions inside this month as well.

They also featured Katherine Keigl in a new light, with a bold hair cut and sultry looks.

Jennifer Garner warmed the cover of InStyle. The magazine revealed hot looks for the New Year. Showing off bold prints and highlighting “grape” as the new “it” color.

They described it as “eye-catching and sumptuous, this bluish purple adds richness and depth to your wardrobe”.

This issue of InStyle also includes sneak peaks into what you can expect to see this month on the runway, but be prepared to see bold prints, patterns, and a new trend of pastels!

I recently got a chance to sit with the creator of this blog, Chelsea Brown, and boyfriend Scott to discuss everything Tea Talk.

Brown started her blog about three years ago to stay in touch with her boyfriend while she was away for the summer. She likes that she is able to meet new people and said that she met one of her best friends through her blog.

Tea Talk has a few different sections titled outfits, adventures and love. Under these sections you can find anything from her stylish outfits to some of the best coffee houses in Arizona. She said she loves working on the adventure section because it is just her going out and going through her day. After going to coffee shops or restaurants she feels inspired to write about it.

Tea Talk has been featured in Lucky Magazine as part of their “Lucky Style Collective”. Brown said when she found out they were accepting new members, she applied. After about a month she found out that she had been accepted.

Her work with Lucky consists of advertising on her blog for the magazine as well as potential features in their print or online publication.

Right now Brown is working on her Masters in communication studies and hopes to one day blog for a major company but still plans on keeping her personal blog for the long haul.

As of now check out her blog and see for yourself the different adventures she takes and outfits she showcases. “I want to keep doing my blog, keep doing what I am now… and see where it goes,” Brown said.

It’s that time of the year again. Time to start fresh as the new year begins to unfold.

As we embark on these next 12 months with fresh minds and open arms, it is important that our goals last longer than boot season in Arizona. So why not start with our closets? Enough of saying what we wish for in our wardrobes and instead, ditch the empty promises and ACT, ACT, ACT!

The first resolution is to commit to an ensemble. You can’t appear fearless if you’re too scared to try something new.

As the past fall season of 2012 was adorned in taupe, beige and other various neutrals on the color palette, this drives a new-found obligation to incorporating color.

Color is a powerful psychological tool: green promotes growth, blue produces chemicals that are calming and red consistently draws attention. The year 2012 should be all about new doors opening, and your closet door should be no exception.

Bold colors draw the right kind of attention.

Next is the motto 'less is more'. So often we fall into superficial trends and empty our wallets for pieces that work only for a short period of time. Class is associated with timelessness and with that, the accessories and pieces we decide to purchase in this approaching year should be regarded as ones that have no expiration date.

Karen McKnight, also known by her blog alias, The Scottsdale Fashionista, has one of the more popular blogs in Phoenix, averaging 25,000—30,000 page views every month.

“It’s just amazing to me that it all started with zero,” said McKnight.

The Scottsdale Fashionista, a fashion-based blog has been up and running for about a year and a half now and McKnight likes to think her combination of humor and fashion keeps readers coming back for more.

“I try to keep the blog entertaining, I write funny posts too,” said McKnight. “Every once and awhile I will write about doggy yoga or something like that, the blog is really half fashion and half entertainment.”

The Scottsdale Fashionista features original content four to five times a week and looks at women’s fashion trends worldwide but also brings it home by highlighting the local fashion scene in Arizona.

McKnight prides herself on the relationships she has been able to build with the local fashion scene, making her one of the more recognizable fashion bloggers.

“Although it took me a year, I am now the only blogger in the city who is allowed to go into Nordstrom in Scottsdale Fashion Square and take pictures,” said McKnight. “I have worked really hard to establish my contacts and make a good name for myself.”

McKnight cannot only be seen writing for her blog, The Scottsdale Fashionista, but she is also a free-lance writer for various publications like Runway Magazine.

With all of the writing she has published, McKnight still finds new inspiration and says she always has about 25-30 blog ideas in her head at all times.

“I love writing,” said McKnight. “And the beauty about fashion writing is that the industry moves so quickly [that] you always have plenty to write about.”

Along with updating her blog weekly, McKnight also uses other forms of social media like Twitter, Facebook and most recently a Tumblr blog.

“I take a lot of pictures that I don’t always get to use on my blog and that is what is great about Tumblr,” said McKnight.

The Tumbr blog should be up and running the first of this next year.

DIY T-Shirt Scarf

As a college student, I am always on a budget. Even when I getthe odd card from a generous relative with money in it, it always seems todisappear in a few days, mostly for food. I am always looking for ways to spruceup my wardrobe without spending a lot.

Coming from Michigan, I thought therewas no way I’d need things like scarves to keep warm. Recently Arizona has taught me that I was wrong. So, with mystrict budget, I thought I’d show you all how to make a scarf.

It isn't too difficult todo and only takes around 15 minutes. The best part of it is the cost, which forme was nothing. You could get a t-shirt from a thrift store and the cost wouldstill be very low.

To start you’ll need a shirt, it can be plain or have a design,anything goes.

Step one: Cut the shirt from armpit to armpit. That part can bediscarded. Then cut off the hem of the shirt. Don't discard this, it will come into play later on.

Step two: Flip the shirt so the seam would be the top and bottom.Cut the shirt into strips. You can measure them if you’d like, but it isn’tnecessary. You will want to leave about an inch of space at the top.

Step three: Stretch out each strip, you can do this individuallyor all at once. The more you stretch a strip, the longer the end product will be.

Step four: This is where you can get creative. You can braid asection of the scarf, then tie it using the hem and leave the rest of it loose,or you can leave it as is. I chose to wrap the hem around the section that wasoriginally at the top of the shirt and then tie it off.

The finished product will look like this:

It’s the perfect fall/winter accessory for any young adult living on a budget.It’s not time consuming, it’s fashionable and it costs next to nothing.

Steve Nash Introduces Clothing Line

Phoenix Suns point-guard Steve Nash recently launched his first clothing line, Steve Nash Collection, which features dapper menswear ranging from blazers and three-piece-suits to bowties and cufflinks. The line was developed in tandem with Canadian-based Indochino, one of the largest in-line retailers for custom suits.

"I'm proud to announce my own line of custom suits from @Indochino . . . I have been wearing @Indochino suits for three years and have recently joined the company as a proud investor," tweeted Nash, one of a rising influx of athletes dabbling in fashion.

For those ballin’ on a budget, Nash’s chic designs seemingly outfit only the affluent, yet are affordable for those consumers who are more economically contentious. The collection includes pieces like $79 long-sleeve button downs, $329 camel and navy peacoats and $399 shadow-plaid suits, each reasonably priced for the rich wool, mercerized cotton and cashmere fabrics woven to create the garments.

In celebration of the new collection, Nash and Indochino teamed up to create “The Steve Nash Experience” Facebook contest, which invites participants to ‘like’ their page to win a $4,000 experience including round-trip airfare to Phoenix for two, two custom suits from the Steve Nash Collection, $500 spending money, two tickets to a Phoenix Suns game (fortunately the NBA lockout has finally ended, squashing speculation that the winnings wouldn’t be redeemed until 2013) and a meet-and-greet with Nash himself.

The lockout drove some players to seek over-seas contracts and other forms of employment, but it didn’t have the same effect on Nash who traded in his trademark greasy mop of hair for a Pat Riley-inspired hairstyle while also replacing his eco-friendly tees with ascot-ornamented blazers. Move over Amar’e Stoudemire and Kevin Willis, there is a new designer on the runway.

Unlike other online retailers, this trendy company recommends jewelry items to fit individual style through a personal style quiz. The outcome is a virtual showroom filled with trendy yet timeless jewelry of the highest quality.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s T-shirt company, StyleMint, follows the same innovative technique as JewelMint.

Phoenix Blogger Series: Global Runway

As many of us know, the fashion world is not confined to the depths of our closets, but instead is an endless runway of those who walk it, those who admire it and those who report on it.

Fellow Arizona Fashion blogger, Sarai Cervantes of Global Runway, took the time to meet with me to discuss a few of her motives behind creating her own online canvas dedicated to the fashion world.

Having been an avid blogger since 2009, Cervantes has only continued to build up her portfolio, establishing a reputable name for herself among many other fellow bloggers. It wasn’t until just recently that she began posting anywhere from 6-8 times a day.

“The comments push me to blog more. Whenever I hear back from readers, it helps me to keep going,” Cervantes said.

Access to prominent fashion magazines and websites allow for knowledge of the latest trends; however this information is not limited to just these outlets. Today social networking has created a vehicle for anyone who demonstrates the tiniest flare in an area of interest, enabling them to share with others their ideas and opinions in an easily obtainable way.

Cervantes is not alone in the fashion blogging network, but she most definitely offers a fresh and innovative take on it.

“It’s usually always the same fashion shows - Milan, London, Paris, New York. I wanted to incorporate global runway shows that people might not necessarily know about such as Argentina, Brazil and the China Fashion weeks.” Cervantes said.

Hoping to further pursue her enthusiasm for anything and everything fashion, Cervantes continues to attract a following in the hopes of someday transforming her blog into an online magazine. Cervantes expresses the many rewarding opportunities she’s had.

“I think it has helped me to attend more events in person, which then helps me to meet more people and make more connections.” Cervantes said.

Not only does Cervantes feel that what she does is extremely self-rewarding, but is also extremely worthwhile.

In asking her the best approach to becoming further immersed in the fashion world, she said, “Contacting public relations of different brands are helpful because they are able to send information about possible events to attend.”

It is important to look outside our own personal spheres of influence and gain perspective through expanding onto other connections. Cervantes has allowed for this to take place in her own selfless efforts to create an oasis of information for others with similar passions to enjoy and appreciate.

We may just come to find that our ability to connect the dots within society is actually our most flattering accessory.

Best of: 2011 Red Carpet Style

Award shows are always a showdown of fashion, so I backtracked the past award shows this year and found some looks that truly stood out. I looked at the People’s Choice Awards, Emmys, Academy Awards, Latin Grammys, Country Music Awards, Grammys, Golden Globes, Video Music Awards and the American Music Awards. While these were action packed shows, fashion certainly took center stage.

The pressure to find the “Best Dressed” within a group of stunning fashion is quite tremendous, but that is exactly what I have set out to do. I looked through red carpet looks from throughout 2011 and found the fashion statements that undeniably stood out!

Virginia Williams and Selena Gomez really shined on the red carpet for the People's Choice Awards. Williams’ dress was a great length, had sparkle and revealed her back. Gomez’ dress was a soft pink and featured a ruffle across one shoulder. Her hair was parted to the side which really showed off the dramatic sleeve.

During the Golden Globes Catherine Zeta-Jones, Robert Downey Jr. and Emma Stone showed off their style. Zeta-Jones’ dress had a dramatic sense, which in my opinion is perfect for an award show. I think she managed to stun without going crazy. The always debonair RDJ mixed his grey suit with a red tie and black shoes. Stone’s dress was simple yet stunning. She showed that it is not always about having the most dramatic outfit that can make an impact on the red carpet.

Kelly Osbourne took center stage during the Grammys. Osbourne’s dress was the perfect length and featured a crafted one shoulder cut. The ribbon around the waist and ruffle on the top and bottom completed the faultless look.

The Academy Awards sparked the attention as both Rhea Durham and Camila Alves took the red carpet. Durham’s outfit had the perfect amount of solid color combined with the alluring printed pattern. The crimson red really stood out against the beige and black. Alves’ dress was floor length and had a gapingly low neckline. The dress was form fitting at the top and then flowed at the bottom.

Zoe Saldana and Kate Holmes went for unique twists on their ensembles at the Video Music Awards. Saldana wore a dress made from varying textures and the top had a shockingly low neckline and the bottom was plain black. Katie Holmes matched her dress with tan booties that added a different statement to her outfit.

Aubrey Plaza and Aimee Teegarden went for a chic, glamorous look at the Emmys. Plaza’s dress was long and the top was looser and the bottom was more form fitting until the dramatic sweep across the floor. Teegarden’s dress was one-shoulder and was shorter in the front than in the back, creating a theatrical effect.

Shakira and Pablo Alboran dressed their best for the Latin Grammys red carpet. Shakira’s dress had a lot of details on the top though became simpler as the dress flowed down. Alboran’s look was classic but was worn well.

The Country Music Awards featured many celebrities though Tim McGraw and Faith Hill completely seemed to stand out. McGraw was wearing a black suit with a black shirt and a cowboy hat. The cowboy hat was a perfect touch to a sultry look. Hill wore a long, slim fitting white dress that was simple yet chic.

The red carpet at the American Music Awards featured hot looks from both Selena Gomez and Jenny McCarthy. Gomez had a long dress with a low neckline and a deep slit. It featuring a great fit as well as had gaping material. McCarthy’s dress was above the knee and made from a plum toned material.

Whitney Port speaks to students at Arizona State

Whitney Port, reality TV star from MTV The Hills and The City,came to ASU on Wednesday, November 30 to talk to students about her success inthe fashion industry and provide insight on what working in this industry isreally like.

Whitney looked stunning in a Rachel Comey jacket and shirt,paired with shorts from her own Spring 2012 collection and a Lulu Frostnecklace.

When asked what designers inspire her personal style, Port said,“I’m not a label person, I just see something and I like it.”

Whitney then shared her story of success, starting fromchildhood to her reality TV days to becoming the fashion designer and icon thatshe is today.

She also emphasized her passion for giving back through a video of hertrip to Liberia, where she partnered with Face Africa, anorganization that seeks to empower local women by teaching them to sew andproduce garments for American retailers.

“I think charity is a really importantaspect of what we do,” Port said.

Afterthe video, Port encouraged a question and answer period. Students’ questionsranged from life as a reality star to her beauty regimen but most wereinterested in what advice Port could provide for those looking to break intothe fashion industry.

Whitneyrepeatedly emphasized the importance of internships that could connect you tothe people you needed to know. Giving examples from her internship days atWomen’s Wear Daily and Kelly Cutrone, she encourages students to take risks andnever give up.

“Your goals CAN become a reality!” Port said.

Port doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon. Fueled with enthusiasm and positivefeedback from her fans, her future plans include getting her clothing line intoa department store and starting a jewelry line.

WhitneyPort acknowledged that although she didn’t have the typical experience breakinginto the industry, her knowledge and experience gained could provide insight,as well as inspiration, for any college student looking to start their own companyin the fashion industry.

Phoenix Blogger Series: Indie Stitch

As what is described as a collaborative to help push localfashion forward, Indie Stitch creates anoutlet for local bloggers and fashion fans to experience all that Phoenix hasto offer.

While Phoenix isn’t globally known as a fashion capital, thelocal style scene is definitely something to consider. Without the help ofinternationally known magazines and style icons, Phoenix’s main fashionexpression comes from its local bloggers and followers.

Indie Stitch creator Dustin Hoyman started out in themarketing field and always had a taste for fashion and a passion for art. Butit wasn’t until his first run at Phoenix Fashion week nearly four years agothat he really jumped into the local fashion scene.

“I kind of tripped and fell into it,” Hoyman said. “I justfell in love with it, fell in love with the people and just really wanted tosupport it.”

Born and raised in Phoenix, Hoyman’s love of the city iswhat fueled him to bring awareness to all the local art. He saw the potential the valley had to really become astaple in the fashion world on a larger scale.

“I really want to bring fashion into Phoenix,” Hoyman said. “Nobodygives Phoenix any credit…we have a uniqueness to us and it’s always growing andgetting better.”

Indie Stitch came about in the last few years from Hoyman’sinnate desire to bring attention to Phoenix fashion even though as Hoyman saidhe isn’t as into the fashion specifically as he is into the whole scene.

Thuy An Bui, a contributing blogger for Indie Stitch, said theblog is all about support for local art, whether it’s fashion trends or eventsand it’s the devotion of the bloggers that has made it such a well-known aspectof Phoenix fashion and style.

“Phoenix really has something but we haven’t done as much inthe past to promote it on a wider scale.” Bui said. “With Indie Stitch we wantpeople to see that we have a real fashion scene here and there’s more toPhoenix than what people expect.”

Hoyman said he wanted to bring in contributors to his siteto really expose them to the industry and bring more and more notoriety totheir ideas and writing. He said Indie Stitch was and is about connections.

“Everybody wants to support each other…It’s more based oncommunity than competition,” Hoyman said. “Most people want to help build thiscommunity and push it forward.”

Victoria's Secret Diamond Bra: 1996 - 2011

When peeling back a woman’s clothing, what she wears beneath her Chanel dress or Rag & Bone jeans characterizes who she is when no one is looking. Stripped down,undergarments define a woman’s sacred identity. In an act of flaunting theconcealed, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show features an annually-crafted,diamond-themed bra that epitomizes a woman’s beauty and opulence.

The first diamond bra wasintroduced in 1996, a year after the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show debut, asthe Million Dollar Miracle Bra. Itwas worn by Claudia Schiffer and drizzled in diamonds from strap to under-wire,costing $1,000,000. Schiffer wore the bra in a photo shoot, but the bra was notpresented on the runway.

The following year, TyraBanks wore the $3,000,000 white diamond, Diamond Dream Bra, which, althoughpricier than its predecessor, also did not appear on the runway.

Maintainingthe trend in price-tag raising, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show presentedthe Dream Angle Bra in 1998, worth $5,000,000 worn by Daniela Pestova, and thediamond-encrusted, star-studded $10,000,000 Millennium Bra adorned by HeidiKlum in 1999.

Next came the Red Hot Fantasybra and panty set, a $15,000,000 lingerie coupling that broke the GuinnessWorld Records book as the most expensive underwear in theworld. More than 1,300 stonesincluding Thai rubies garnished the red satin bra, which was worn in 2000 byGisele Bundchen in a photo shoot, and also did not grace the runway.

In her second time around,Heidi Klum broke the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show spell when she wore the$12,500,000 Heavenly Star Bra on the runway. The 2001 million-dollar bra wasdrenched in 1,200 Sri Lankan pink sapphires and a 90-carat, emerald-cutdiamond.

After Klum set the standard,the 2002 Star of Victoria Fantasy Bra, valued at $10,000,000 worn by KarolinaKurkova, and the 2003 Very Sexy Fantasy Bra, the third million-dollar bradonned by Klum, were shown on the runway. The Very Sexy Fantasy Bra was worth $11,000,000 and featured the secondlargest diamond in the world, a 70-carat diamond.

In 2004, Tyra Banks wore hersecond coveted Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show bra, which cost $10,000,000 witha 70-carat pear-shaped diamond placed at the center of the bra. After Banks debuted the Heavenly“70” Fantasy Bra, Gisele Bundchen also modeled her second million-dollar bra,the 2005 Sexy Splendor Fantasy Bra that was worth $12,500,000 in diamonds, rubygemstones and white gold.

The onset of dramaticVictoria’s Secret wings under way, Karolina Kurkova strut down the runway atthe 2006 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show wearing the Hearts on Fire DiamondFantasy Bra and a matching set of wings. The $6,500,000 bra was comprised ofmore than 2,000 diamonds, complete with a 10-carat diamond-brooch centerpiece.

In 2007, Selita Ebanks wasdressed in the $4,500,000 Holiday Fantasy Set, which as she described wasnot as pretty as it looked.

“Yeah, diamonds hurt,” shesaid in an interview with huffingtonpost.com. “I don’t know about wearing diamonds on your crotch.”

The set included the bra,thong and garter, which were embellished with diamonds, rubies, emeralds andyellow sapphires.

“It’s like you’re walking andscraping,” she said. “This is notcohesive to get a man. No manwants a scratchy vagina.”

Adriana Lima came next in2008 after the holiday vixen, wearing the Black Diamond Fantasy MiracleBra. The black-diamond bra, worth$5,000,000,was designed by celebrity jeweler Martin Katz who jeweled the bra with 3,575 black diamonds, 117 one-caratround diamonds and 34 rubies.

Also dripping in diamonds wasthe 2009 Harlequin Fantasy Bra that was worn by Marissa Miller and had 2,300diamonds with a 16-carat, heart-shaped diamond pendant as the focal point.

The Bombshell Fantasy Bra,modeled in the 2010 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show by Adriana Lima, was next inline for the million-dollar bra title. Six Diani craftsmen spent more than 1500hours to complete the $2,000,000 bra comprised of more than 3,000 whitediamonds, light blue sapphires and oval-shaped topazes, which were all set in18-karat white gold.

Continuing the celebratoryexpression of femininity, Miranda Kerr will wear a $2,500,000 bra on the runwayNov. 29 during the television debut of the 2011 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. The Fantasy Treasure Bra features yellow diamonds, whitediamonds, citrines, aquamarines, pearls, white gold and yellow gold. Accessorized with a touch ofeverything, the Fantasy Treasure Bra preserves the legacy revealing thegrandeur and elegance beneath every woman’s surface.

The aftermath of Black Friday

I’ll admit that I was a little bit crazy to volunteer to workBlack Friday, but money is money right? Though trying to park toclock-in on time for my shift was a challenge and so was weaving my way throughthe mall between ladies’ massive Victoria’s Secret bags, parents wielding hugetoy boxes from Target and everything else on sale being dragged down thewalkways.

I work at Justice, but thatdidn’t mean the clearance-searching maniacs steered clear of the store lookingfor better bargains, because in reality, the store was ultimate chaos.

The store looked much like any other 40% off sale or superclearance sale we ever have plus about ten times the people looking for holidaygifts, birthday gifts for next summer just because it was cheap, and parentstaking their kids on shopping sprees and taking advantage of the sales.

Seeing all of the shoppers did make me jealous and the food courtwas just as insane and packed full of people and things. I should havecontemplated going shopping instead because work was nothing short of hectic.

I remember a few years back, my mother and I had woken up at 4a.m. to get the cheapest deal on Kitchen Aid mixers at Kohl’s. Apparentlyeveryone else had seen the commercial on TV as well, because when we got there allthey had was a huge line stretching around the entire store and sales thatweren't worth waiting in line for. I don’t remember exactly,but I’m pretty positive we just went home after that.

Aside from working today and that one Kohl’s venture in the past,I haven’t really taken any intense trips to brave the Black Friday crowdsunless I find something I really need or want for a great price, which is rare.

Things I have learned: Get up early because you still have a tinychance at getting what you woke up for, be prepared to be patient and focusedbecause everyone else wants what you want and make a list of what you’reafter. I definitely lost count of how many parents walked into Justice today askingif we have any more of that one blue sweater you have to buy for all thegirls in the family or if I can check back stock for the extra purses, becausehonestly, someone probably got to them first.

Phoenix Blogger Series: Pink Slip Style

With bubblegum pink borders,colorful photos of chic ready-to-wear outfits and anecdotal entries detailinginspirational looks, it isn’t difficult for fashion fanatics to get wrapped upin Pink Slip Style, a Phoenix fashion blog.

In a city where fashion hasbeen moved to back burner at many local publications, a haven for style news isbeing made on the web with the help of fashion blogging.

When the style section atthe Arizona Republic folded this year, Casey Hagarty and Ginger Murphy, stylesection contributors, took their talent to the web and launched their blog,Pink Slip Style.

“We both had worked for thestyle section and we felt that now there was no fashion outlet,” Hagarty said.“For some reason, fashion is being pulled out of publications because no one isinvesting in luxury like they used to.”

Hagarty, whose style can bedescribed as “eclectic and vintage inspired” said that a blog seemed like thebest way to get the word out about fashion news here in Phoenix.

The blog is not only acreative outlet for the two fashion savvy women, but a business venture as well.

“With this blog we have beenable to connect with a lot of businesses and now public relations,” Hagartysaid. “People are sending us press releases and we are getting deals with localboutiques.”

Hagarty mentioned thefreedom involved with blog writing as opposed to working for a publication.

“When working for apublication it becomes obligatory to write about the advertisers,” Hagartysaid. “You can’t try out the products and experience them when you are with apublication.”

With a fan base establishedwhile working for The Arizona Republic, Hagarty and Murphy realized that theyhave a voice in the fashion industry here in Phoenix. Already, there have been75 people that have subscribed to their blog since it was first launched thisJuly.

Kira Brown, editor of thestyle section at Desert Living Today, a magazine that focuses on design,architecture, fashion and art, also has her own Phoenix based fashion blog,fashionphoenix.com.

Brown has worked withHagarty and Murphy through Desert Living Today by featuring several of theirreviews in the magazine.

“I love their blog,” Brownsaid. “You have to have variety, and in my own blog I have featured otherpeople, it’s not just about you but also the industry.”

A blog can be used as aplatform to the next step in a career, Brown said. Her own blog led her to herjob now as style editor.

“You never know who will belooking and reading,” Brown said.

For those looking to startup their own fashion blog, Hagarty has a tip:

“If you don’t have a bigbudget, you have to be informative,” Hagarty said. “Start off making it aboutother people, bargains and shops.”

Though the economy left Hagartyand Murphy out of a job, their passion for style still survives. The header ontheir blog reads their new mantra, “laid off an looking good.”

Long lines, busy stores and brawls over the last pair ofsize eight half-priced Manolo Blahnik’s – Black Friday is crazy, but worth it.For most, Black Friday marks the start of holiday shopping and for retailers itbrings in the most revenue compared to any other day of the year. For the fashionista, the day is allabout the deals.

In order to avoid stress, fatigue and physical harm (or maybedeath, in 2008 a Wal-Mart employee was trampled to death when the store openedat 5:00 am on Black Friday) it would be helpful to follow some of these tipsand tricks:

1. Plan ahead. Know the stores you want to shop atbefore heading out for the day. A planned out shopping trip will ensure goodorganization and secure you the best deals. If you have something specific youare looking for it will be best to find the prime time to visit the store toavoid long lines.

2. Dress for efficiency. Depending on where you arelocated in the country, it is best to wear clothing that will be easy to changein and out of in the dressing room. Leggings are a good idea because you can try on pants over them withouthaving to go into the dressing room. Leave the complicated button up shirts andlong scarves at home.

3. Research the deals. Some stores have betterdeals than other. If you are looking for electronics, Black Friday is one ofthe best days to buy. Stores like Best Buy and Target usually have the mostinsane sales on laptops, cameras and televisions.

4. Shop in groups. The lines at many stores oftensnake out the door so if you have something you think you might buy but need totry on send a friend to wait in line for you that way you can cut down the waittime.

5. Understand the return policies. Some BlackFriday deals are final sale. It would be unfortunate to splurge on an AlexanderWang bag to take it home and find a tear in the leather with no way to get yourmoney back. If you understand the return policies it will help with decisionmaking and avoiding possible future heartbreak.

Versace for H&M: A Match Made in Fashion Heaven

With so manydesigner-retailer collaborations going on, it’s hard to keep each of them straight.But one new collection is on every fashionista’s mind - “The Very Best ofVersace” clothing line debuting at H&M this month!

H&Mannounced the limited edition fall collection partnered with the Italian powerhouselabel back in June.

"Versace is one of the most important brands of recenttimes, and their collection for H&M will be glamorous andflamboyant — everything Versace stands for,” Margareta van den Bosch, creativeadviser at H&M, said in a press release.

Feel like your fall wardrobe is missing some neon blocking,leather mini dresses or gold studs? Well this line is the answer to yourprayers. The collection features early 90s designs that were originated byfounder Gianni Versace, including traditional Greek motifs, palm trees and noshortage of leather, studs and beading.

Donatella Versace, the label’s chief designer, said in aninterview with H&M that she “wanted this opportunity to show where Versacehas been and where it is now.”

She told the Wall street Journal that the collection was anhomage to Gianni and that he would love the clothes as well as the celebrationof the brand as much as she does.

To celebrate thecollaboration, Versace and H&M hosted a fashion show at New York’s Pier 57.The packed event boasted a star-studded guest list including Blake Lively, Uma Thurman andZachary Quinto with after party performances by Nicki Minaj and Prince!

After the event, Versace told the Wall Street Journal “ifGianni was there, he would approve. It was so much fun.”

Vince Camuto Trunk Show visits Arizona State

The Vince Camuto Holiday Fashion/ Trunk Show took placeWednesday at 8 p.m. with an audience of approximately 50 girls in Arizona StateUniversity’s Memorial Union.

VinceCamuto’s campus representative Tara Molina, put on the show and said that thiswas Vince Camuto’s first year on Arizona State’s campus and that the company isexcited to get more involved.

VinceCamuto co-founded the brand Nine West and has also designed for JessicaSimpson, Tory Burch and BCBG.

Thefirst 50 guests received Vince Camuto make-up bags as well as goodie bags thatincluded nail polish, lip balm, a small coin purse, perfume and a Vince Camutocoupon. Sweets such as cupcakes and cookies were also served to those inattendance.

Theroom was decorated in Vince Camuto posters and predominately pink décor, fromballoons to Vince Camuto tablecloths. A DJ, who was playing top-20 music, alsoaccompanied the event.

Theshow began with a short fashion show of seven different Vince Camuto looks. Theoutfits featured statement necklaces, flowing tops, chunky heels and sequineddresses.

Afterthe fashion show there was a raffle. Items being raffled off included twohandbags, umbrellas, jewelry, gift cards and even a blanket.

Followingthe show guests were encouraged to stay and receive advanced screening passesand posters for the upcoming movie New Years Eve.

“Ireally enjoyed the free give-aways. I also liked the style of the clothes,especially all the sequins!” said Alex Kenyon, a sophomore at ASU who attendedthe event.

'Fall'ing back into style, autumn trends are here to stay

This past Indian summer prolonged the much anticipated drop in temperature, as most of us seasonal fashionistas prayed for boot season to approach us sooner than it had. Fall and winter has arrived simultaneously here at Arizona State, but regardless of its tardiness the autumn season runway has finally graced us with its presence.

Kaloni Garcia, 19 and a sophomore at Arizona State, said “This fall I’m hoping to maintain my sense of colors as I include at least one vibrant accessory to dress up the neutrals everyone seems to stick to during the season." She then added that “Animal prints are an extremely trendy and an easy way to style up a warm outfit for the cold.”

The runway was keen on the use of patterns in its wardrobes during the fashion weeks. Mixing and matching patterns now turns heads for a different reason in that it exhibits a certain fashion initiative. This being so, the different textiles add dimension and the necessary warmth to an ensemble.

Caroline Hall, 19 and another sophomore at Arizona State, said “I take any opportunity I can to incorporate different styles into one, but always include my vintage accent pieces”. She also stated “Blazers and vests are a great way to layer in the season."

Hall add some socks to her boots for an extra cozy layer.

While last year’s focus color on the runway was camel, this fall gets bolder with rust as the tone of choice. This bronzed shade compliments almost any skin tone and helps to create a flexible canvas for additional use of the color palate.

As college students, convenience is our best friend, making the recent summer’s bohemian trend a god send as we are able to carry some of those pieces into the fall with us. A patterned head scarf can complement a seemingly drab outfit as well as make for an effortless look. Even a maxi skirt gets optimal use by throwing a baggy-yet chic sweater over top of it.

While fall is generally classified as a dark color season, the trend catches this mantra off guard by acknowledging the use of bright accent pieces - colored denim is a great way to channel your vivid side.

As Coco Chanel always believed, “Fashion is architecture: it is a matter of proportions”. With that being said, falling back into trend can be made as simple as following this season’s runway blueprint. We may not see any leaves change color, but that doesn’t mean we don’t need to change ours!

30 Day Style Challenge: Defeated

My faithful followers,

I am sorry to inform you that I have in fact failed at my style challenge. I am not one to normally back down to a challenge, especially when I am publicizing it for all to see, but there is just no possible way for me to continue the challenge.

I seriously began to have anxiety about getting dressed because I was stressed about wearing one item more than another or just really not having enough variety in my day to day style.

I am very sad to say that I have truly let myself down. When I began this journey I laughed at those who doubted me, but turns out I should have listened to them, as this is just impossible for me.

But I did make it 15 days, which to me is pretty amazing so I am congratulating myself on that achievement. At least I know that if I go on vacation for two weeks I can definitely pack light and still be fashionable!

So for now I end this challenge in defeat, but I promise to continue shopping to enhance my wardrobe and hopefully not too far in the future I will be able to attempt the style challenge again.

Hunter Rain Boots Add Shine to Stormy Days

While most Arizonans prefer the dry heat the desert brings,I embrace the rain that occasionally visits us. Sadly, it is for only onereason: my Hunter rain boots.

While rainstorms are few and far between in the great stateof Arizona, every fashionista should be prepared for whenever we might be facedwith dreary weather.

The Hunter 'Kellen' boot in cranberry. It was definitely love at first sight. I had always been drawn to the shiny rubber that Hunter boots are made from and I finally pulled the trigger this year.

Hunter was once a primarily Scottish company with mostlyBritish clientele. The boots were designed to combat Europe’s rugged terrainand gloomy rainy days, but now Hunter offers their classic, colorful rubberboots worldwide.

The great thing about the rubber boot is that they come inmany different colors and styles that could compliment any fashionista's wardrobe. Not to mention, who doesn’t love a little pop of color on a gloomyday?

Ever since this purchase I find myselfconstantly checking the weather so I can wear them on the right day. Thetemperatures are finally starting to drop though and I cannot wait until I canbreak them in.

Some might be a little afraid of the color and patentrubber, but fear not fashionistas, there are many great ways you can style aHunter rain boot. I put together some clothing sets and all of the looks feature versatile pieces of clothing that can be worn with the Hunter 'Kellen' boot or any other rubber galoshes.

As you can see, rain boots are more versatile than most people think. Not only can these same outfits be worn on a rainy day with the accompaniment of a nice rain jacket, they can also be worn all year round.

My style closely resembles that of the first photo set, so whenever Arizona gets the slightest bit of rain, wind or clouds you can guarantee that you will see me combating the gloomy weather with my cranberry rain boots, skinny jeans, sheer blouse and oversized accessories.

Who knows, I might even throw in a patterned umbrella. Embrace the few seasonal changes we get in Arizona this season with a colorful, rubber rain boot, you won't be sad you did.

Japanese Teeth Trend, Yaeba, Coming to US

Botox. Check. Liposuction. Check. Fake tan. Check. Hair extensions. Check. Vampire teeth. Check?

We’ve all heard of those people who will go to any lengths to get the look they want, no matter how expensive or how long they have to spend under the knife. Recently, a new surgical trend has emerged out of Japan to allow women to get the look they want, and it’s probably not what you would expect.

Many Japanese women have taken on the challenge to have the best teeth they can with the help of some dental surgeons, and not only do they want them changed, they want them to look more imperfect. These women want to have a bright smile with two noticeable fangs on either side.

According to The New York Times, the most attractive teeth are those that aren’t flawlessly straight, like the type that Americans strive for by spending billions of dollars on aesthetic dentistry.

“In Japan crooked teeth are actually endearing, and show that a girl is not perfect. In a way, men find that more approachable than someone who is too overly perfect,” said Michelle Phan, a Vietnamese-American beauty blogger in Los Angeles, to The New York Times.

These fangs that everyone wants are referred to as “yaeba” in Japanese and many women and celebrities want them, which is why dentists are offering the service to “affix plastic fronts to their real teeth.”

Is this trend going to make its way to America? With our obsession with perfection, we’ll have to wait and see.

Of course, The New York Times also pointed out that in some high-fashion scenes, imperfect or gap teeth are considered attractive, like a wide gap between the two front teeth.

Dr. Emelia Zaslow, a communication studies professor at Pace University told The New York Times that a preoccupation with youth is one of the reasons for wanting imperfect fang teeth.

She told The New York Times, “The gaped tooth is sort of preorthodontic or early development, and the naturally occurring ‘yaeba’ is because of delayed baby teeth, or a mouth that’s too small...It’s this kind of emphasis on youth and the sexualization of young girls.”

Maybe there’s more to these teeth than just wanting to be less perfect, but for now, that’s up to you to decide. Would you add that to your list of work you need done after botox and a tummy tuck, or does it fall into the category of being just as fake as plastic surgery?

Bakst and her colleagues callthemselves “jeaniuses” because they strive to know everything about the brand,cut and fabric of the jeans that they have in store and what works on differentwomen’s figures.

“My goal is three pulls and then we’re on the right track tofinding the customer something they really like," said Bakst.

The passion behind the jeans adds to the unique help and service onegets from shopping at Industrie Denim. Jen made this clear with her own driveand love for jeans by saying, “ I enjoy jeans more than anything else, I think its thatkind of aspect of being able to help somebody. I mean a lot of people can weara top, not a lot of people can wear skinny jeans.”

In addition to having a knowledgeable staff, Industrie Denimprovides customers with the opportunity to check out their jeans from everyangle with their “Booty Cam”. This is a single loop, non-recording camera thatreflects the image into a mirror on the other side of the fitting room.

“Youcan see without having to angle and distort your body,” says Jen. The storealso provides a 3-way mirror, as well as two ceiling to floor mirrors so thecustomer can get the full effect of how the jeans look on their body.

Industrie Denim clearly goes to great lengths to create anexperience for everyone that walks in. The eclectic mix of décor furthers theuniqueness of this store, even featuring décor specific to the city where it’slocated.

The Scottsdale store, for example, showcases country western elementswhile the San Francisco store has actual pieces from the Golden Gate Bridge.

Industrie Denim is definitely a must-stop shop for any fashionistassearching for an amazing pair of jeans. The in-store experience created by thecombination of décor, technology available and, of course, the “jeanius” staffmake this store a great addition to the Arizona denim market.
